FM: Iran unhappy with Azeris’ inappropriate treatment of Iranian truck drivers
TEHRAN – Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian on Thursday expressed disappointment at the inappropriate treatment of Iranian truck drivers and the arrest of two of them by Azeri border guards.
Foreign Minister Abdollahian filed the complaint as he received a copy of the credentials of the new Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Tehran, Ali Alizadeh.
While wishing the Azeri envoy every success during his mission to Tehran and stressing the importance of relations between Tehran and Baku, Abdollahian also described as “surprising” and “regrettable” the recent negative comments by officials of the Republic of Iran. ‘Azerbaijan.
The Iranian foreign minister also said that the military exercises of any country on its territory are a sovereign right, an open reference to the exercises of the Iranian army in northwestern Iran.
He also referred to the recent movements of the Zionist regime near the northwestern borders of Iran, saying that the Islamic Republic will not tolerate the presence of the Zionist regime along its borders and will take the necessary measures against the activities of the regime.
The new Azerbaijani Ambassador, for his part, underlined the good and deep relations between Azerbaijan and Iran as a dear and brotherly neighbor. He also expressed hope that the recent problems will soon be resolved through consultations between officials of the two countries.
Khatibzadeh: military exercises exercise the right to sovereignty
Reacting to criticism from Azerbaijan, the foreign ministry spokesman said the Islamic Republic had exercised its right to sovereignty only by organizing the exercises, which began on Friday.
Saeed Khatibzadeh called the event a “question of sovereignty” and stressed that the exercises had taken place to contribute to “the calm and stability of the whole region”.
In addition, Iranian Ambassador to Baku Abbas Mousavi said the exercises “cannot be considered a threat to our friends”, and that Azerbaijan had been informed months earlier.
The Iranian armed forces regularly organize military maneuvers to improve their military readiness and prowess. The exercises serve as a warning message to enemies against any act of aggression against the Islamic Republic.
Azeri President Ilham Aliyev accused Iran of having sent trucks to cross “illegally” the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is the subject of a dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Khatibzadeh rejected any attempt by Iran to undermine the territorial integrity of others or to encroach on their recognized borders.
Iran condemns provocative act against embassy in Baku
Iran’s ambassador in Baku also strongly condemned recent acts of provocation by some against the Iranian embassy on Thursday evening.
Following the event, four demonstrators were arrested by the diplomatic police as well as by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Azerbaijan.
Mousavi noted that the Iranian Embassy will pursue all legal actions to achieve the desired result.
