Foreign Minister Reiterates Iran’s Support for Diplomatic Efforts to Resolve Ukraine Crisis – Politics News
The head of Iranian diplomacy and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov spoke on the phone Thursday on bilateral, regional and international issues as well as the state of talks aimed at lifting anti-Iranian sanctions.
Amirabdollahian referred to the Iranian government’s recent ratification of the cultural and information security agreements between Iran and Russia and sending them to parliament for approval. He then welcomed the approval of such documents by part of the Russian side.
He described Iran’s position and its opposition to the use of war and sanctions as a tool. He reaffirmed Tehran’s support for a ceasefire and a return to the negotiating table.
Amirabdollahian stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran supports all diplomatic efforts to resolve the Ukrainian conflict given its excellent ties with Russia and is ready to mediate and help resolve the crisis.
The top Iranian diplomat also referred to the sanctions removal talks in Vienna, saying that if the United States acts rationally, the nuclear deal is within reach.
He also called on all parties to the talks to present their own initiatives, the Iranian Foreign Ministry website reported.
He underlined Iran’s firm determination to reach a good, solid and lasting agreement, but respecting its red lines.
The Iranian Foreign Minister further praised Russia’s positive stance and support for an agreement acceptable to Iran.
The two sides then discussed the current status of bilateral issues during the phone conversation.
Sergei Lavrov described the Tehran-Moscow ties as important.
Lavrov stressed that his country’s priority is to implement the documents signed by Russia and Iran, noting that he will personally pursue inter-organizational coordination issues until the final result is reached.
The Russian Foreign Minister reaffirmed Moscow’s support for the conclusion of an agreement and its efforts to help finalize a fair agreement in line with the interests and demands of the Iranian side.
Lavrov also criticized the unconstructive position of the United States and the West and described the latest developments in Ukraine. He welcomed any initiative that would encourage Ukraine to take an interest in dialogue and described Iran’s role in this regard as constructive.
