TEHRAN – Iran on Thursday awarded a prestigious award in the study of science and technology to two US-based physicists.
Cumrun Vafa, professor of physics at Harvard University, received the Mustafa Prize in the field of “All Fields of Science and Technology”. Vafa is an Iranian-American.
The award, he said, reminds him “that there are no boundaries for science and technology and that they belong to all human beings.”
He donated his prize to an Iranian scientific foundation.
A quantum professor at Princeton University, Mr. Zahid Hasan, born in Bangladesh, also received the award.
Three other scientists, the Lebanese Mohamed H. Sayegh, the Pakistani Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary and the Moroccan Yahya Tayalati also won awards.
Each of the five won $ 500,000. They were selected from over 500 participants.
It was the fourth biennial award ceremony since 2015. Iran launched the award as part of its goal of becoming a regional scientific powerhouse.
