“Mausoleum of Poets”: Tabriz in Iran is promoted in local currency

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 31. The Central Bank of Iran (CBI) has printed an image of the “Mausoleum of Poets” (Maqbarat-o-shoara) of Tabriz in the province of East Azerbaijan (northwestern Iran) on its national currency, Iranian parliament member Ruhollah Motafakker Azad told reporters, Trend reports citing IRNA.
The MP noted that the “Mausoleum of Poets” was printed on a 20,000 rial note and will soon be put into circulation. This new image will replace the previous image on the ticket.
Maqbarat-o-shoara or the Mausoleum of Poets is a Maqbara (cemetery) belonging to classical and contemporary poets, mystics and other notables, located in Surkhab district of Tabriz in Iran. It was built by Tahmaseb Dolatshahi in the mid-1970s when he was then Secretary of Arts and Cultures in Eastern Azerbaijan. Since the 1970s there have been attempts to renovate the cemetery area. Some works have been carried out such as the construction of a new emblematic building on this site.
“Given the importance of promoting nationally and internationally known Azerbaijani Iranian personalities and monuments, the Iranian Minister of Economy and Finance and the Director General of the Central Bank of Iran have been requesting since last year that that decision be made,” he said.
Motafakker Azad also said that promoting Iranian Azerbaijan’s famous personalities and monuments will help attract tourists.
He also mentioned that officials are in talks to have other famous personalities and monuments printed on Iranian currency of other denomination as well as inside Iranian passports.
“Iranian Azerbaijan” is a historical region in northwestern Iran that borders Iraq, Turkey, the Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan of Nakhchivan, Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan. “Iranian Azerbaijan” includes four provinces in northwestern Iran: West Azerbaijan, East Azerbaijan, Ardabil and Zanjan.
